The Power Of Scent

Scent has a very powerful impact on our state of mind. It is more than a smell. It is a memory that becomes ingrained in our memory.

The chemicals of the smell are absorbed by our bloodstream and affect our nervous system directly, and in different ways depending on the property of the scent. Entering our body through our mucus membranes sending signals to our limbic system, which is the sector of the brain that controls memory and emotion.

Studies have shown that certain fragrances have been proven to lower stress levels and improve our overall mental outlook. This combination of scent, memory and emotion explains why smells have the power to influence our moods and psychological wellbeing and why marketing corporations rely on ambient air care products to draw attention to consumption to evoke a certain response.

Many of us are disconnected to nature but we seek natural solutions to treating illnesses, unhappiness and personal discomfort.

I have personally experienced the effects of aromatherapy whilst going through a distressing breakup. Scents I made have not only given me grounding but others have supported my children through the changes as well in uplifting and soothing ways.

The power of scent through the mind-body connection that facilitates the limbic system benefits our emotional wellbeing. They have significant and measurable effects on:

We know that stress and emotional states affect us. It does so via our brain, hormones, nervous system and deteriorates our immune systems. Using scent to counter effect & protect us is already part of our life without us paying great attention to it. Take the scent of coffee which has the ability to increase our focus while citrus scent increases productivity.

  • Ylang Ylang has the power to boost our mood, decrease depression, alleviate anxiety lending us a sense of grounding.
  • Clary sage essential oil is a sedative that is utilized to help with emotional issues such as anxiety, stress, and tension. Its scent uplifts moods, can boost self-confidence strength, hope, and self-esteem.
  • Pine scent can decrease anxiety, and lower depression and stress levels. It positively impacts mood by clearing the mind of stress, energizing the body to help eliminate fatigue, enhancing concentration, and promoting a positive outlook.
