Yin Yoga is a meditative form of yoga based on the beliefs of Traditional Chinese Medicine. You hold deep, yogic-style stretches anywhere from five to eight minutes. We practice deep stretches, which allows the muscles to relax. This slower style of practice can be physically and mentally confronting, but, by holding these postures for extended periods of time you access the fascia which surrounds each muscle in the body.

Fascia is kind of like skin under your skin - like a spiderweb suit. It encases and surrounds every single muscle in your body. Passing through the fascia are blood vessels and nerves. Over time, through the natural wear-and-tear of everyday life, we develop adhesions in the fascia which hinder the muscle’s ability to slide and glide over each other efficiently.

Adhesions can also obstruct the flow of blood and nerve communication. This can lead us to feel stiff, tired, and old. Yin Yoga can help to break apart these adhesions and improve mobility, flexibility, energy, and increase hyaluronic acid (HA) levels.

Your skin cells produce this acid naturally to maintain moisture levels. As you hold Yin Yoga poses, you actually stimulate hyaluronic acid in the body and increase the moisture in your joints for greater health and youthfulness. HA has antioxidant properties, is key to hydration, and can help reduce the signs of aging.

Yin Yoga is now one of the most practiced forms of yoga by professional athletes to help prevent injury, proclaiming the benefits of mobility and agility as key to increased longevity in their careers and the youthfulness of their bodies.

So, if you’re looking for anti-aging products you have perhaps found them in this practice! Give Yin Yoga a try for the next 90 days and see how you feel. In case you're new to this and not sure where to start, try out my morning yoga program. The secret of life is in your daily routine.

The benefits of practicing Yin Yoga are long, these are just a few:

  1. creates a calmer more focused state of mind

  2. untangles knots

  3. boosts your metabolism

  4. improves posture

  5. gives you glowing skin

Holding the poses whilst practicing present moment awarenessmindfulness lends space and time for the body & the mind to relax. It is the perfect practice to reconnect to yourself, push pause, breathe, find clarity and focus.

1. Reclining Twist - calmer more focused state of mind

We tend to hold on to things: thoughts, experiences, and emotions. Yin Yoga lends the time and space to release what no longer serves you. Being vulnerable whilst releasing through stillness & breath. Creating space for newness.

2. Squat - untangles knots

Yin yoga is very restorative yoga. It brings us back to our center. Connecting us, mind, and body through conscious awareness has very stress-reducing effects. Together with the right diet, this practice invites renewal within you, improving your metabolism.

3. Child pose - boosts your metabolism

Unlike counting on our muscles to hold the poses, during Yin Yoga practice we focus on alignment: Breath with the body, sit bones with the spine, sensations with the breath, body with Earth. Allowing a comfortable flow of breath and energy, enhancing your natural posture, to take up space.

4. Sphinx - improves posture

Finding comfort in deep stretches, in stillness stimulates our parasympathetic nervous system. This is where we relax, restore, digest boosting the detoxification system in our body. It is also the time for renewal. Renewal of self–awareness. Renewal of cells. Renewal of collagen and elastin. Lending our skin a healthy glow.

5. Side Body Stretch - gives you a glowing skin

Yin Yoga is a lifestyle – it counter-balances the very active driven lives we lead, benefiting body, mind and spirit in a beautifully relaxed way that can only lead to uplifting inner sensations that show on the outside, so you glow! You have to try it to feel it.
